Veggie Spider

This hit the news the other day and got me intrigued, Spiders for the most part are carnavors and eat other invertebrates, occasionally the odd birds/lizard, but Veggie..... nope hadnt heard that one before, so I did a bit of digging and found this guy.

Bagheera kiplingi.

They are found in Mexico and Central America, where it nests in or near swollen-thorn acacia trees, which serve as the spider’s primary food source. B. kiplingi is 5 to 6 mm (about 0.2 inch) long.

They live in Mimosaceae trees, Vachellia in particular, where they live of a diet of specialized protein- and fat-rich nubs called Beltian bodies. These nubs form at the leaf tips of the Acacia as part of a symbiotic relationship with a species of ants. The spiders actively avoid the ants who attempt to guard the Beltian bodies (they compete for the food source) against intruders. Although the Beltian bodies account for over 90% of B. kiplingi diet, the spiders also consume nectar and occasionally steal ant larvae from passing worker ants for food. Sometimes they will cannibalize other B. kiplingi, especially during the dry season.

But for a type of animal famed for its use of silk to capture prey it is remarkable that you would find one with such a plant heavy diet!
