Protozoa!

Being the 95% of life there are many different types of invertebrates. This post will focus on the most basic type of invertebrates;

The protozoa

A lot of people are on the fence on whether these deserve animal status or not. Either way they are a life form that lack a vertebrate, makes them an invertebrate! They are TINY, think 10 to 52 micrometers in length. Most Protozoa are limited to living in moist environments such as soil, mosses, water based habitats although some have developed ‘resting cysts’ these are wetter areas in dry areas allowing them to survive in unsuitable conditions temporarily, such as tidal zones or water edges.

The best way to describe protozoa is as the most basic level of unicellular organisation.

There are an estimated 30,000+ protozoan species; the best example of them being is the parasite that causes malaria. Many protozoans are parasitic or predatory, many being able to cause harm to other organisms, including humans, meaning the study of these amazing organisms is highly needed!
